Apple Health data not showing on iPad? Here's why
Since iPadOS 17, the Health app is on iPad. But open it for the first time and it's often empty, even though your iPhone has years of steps, workouts and sleep. Apps that read Apple Health on the iPad show nothing either. Here's why that happens and how to fix it.
How Health gets onto your iPad
Your iPad doesn't read health data from your iPhone directly. Each device keeps its own Health store, and Apple keeps them in step through iCloud. Your iPhone uploads its Health data to iCloud, and the iPad downloads it. If either side of that isn't working, the iPad stays empty.
The iPad can't add much of its own, either. It has no step counter, and an Apple Watch pairs only with an iPhone. Nearly everything in Health on iPad arrives from your iPhone through iCloud.
First, find out which problem you have
Open the Health app on the iPad itself.
- The Health app is empty too: the data hasn't synced to the iPad. Work through the checklist below.
- The Health app has your data, but another app doesn't: that app doesn't have permission on this iPad. Skip to app permissions.
The sync checklist
Check each step on both your iPhone and your iPad:
- Health is on in iCloud. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Saved to iCloud: See All, and make sure Health is on. It has to be on for the iPhone too, because the iPhone is the one uploading.
- Same Apple Account. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Two-factor authentication and a passcode. Apple encrypts Health data end to end in iCloud, which needs two-factor authentication on your Apple Account and a passcode on each device. Without them, Health won't sync.
- iCloud storage isn't full. Check Settings → your name → iCloud. A full iCloud quietly stops uploads.
- Give it time, on Wi-Fi and power. Leave both devices locked, charging and on Wi-Fi for a few hours, or overnight. A first sync of years of Apple Watch data can take that long. Recent days usually arrive first, older history later.
- Still empty? Restart and re-toggle on the iPad only. Restart both devices. Then, on the iPad only, turn Health in iCloud off and back on. Never do this on your iPhone, where your data actually lives.
App permissions are per device
Allowing an app to read Health on your iPhone doesn't allow it on your iPad. Each device asks separately. If the iPad's Health app has your data but an app shows nothing, open Health → your profile picture → Apps → the app → Turn On All. Then reopen the app, or pull down to refresh.
What to expect afterwards
Once sync is working, new data from your iPhone and Apple Watch shows up on the iPad within minutes to hours, usually faster when both devices are on Wi-Fi. Steps will always come from your iPhone or Watch, never from the iPad itself.
